Vincent Chan wins singles title at OUA Tennis Championship; Warriors finish 5th

Vincent Chan won the OUA singles title at the 2010 OUA men's tennis championship

Vincent Chan (Markham/), the no. 1 Waterloo Warrior tennis player for the 2010 season won the singles title at the OUA men's tennis championship this past weekend in Toronto.

Chan a first year accounting student cruised through the competition at the championship hosted by York at the Rexall Tennis Centre.

Chan was the no. 1 seed going into the tournament and fortunately the weight of expectation of this position did not affect his superb play over the three days of competition. He played intelligent and powerful tennis and did not lose a set on his way to victory. In fact, he didn't give up more than three games in any set.  He won the final by a score of 6-3, 6-3 against his University of Toronto opponent Stefan Srnic. Chan did not lose a match the entire season and for his stellar play was named the top OUA all-star.

Apart from Chan, the rest of the Warriors had a disappointing weekend. Four of the other five members lost their first matches, two of them by close margins. Alex Sahu lost a very close 6-4, 6-4 match losing most of those games in "no ad" situations. Aaron Au (Richmond Hill/) our no.6 came up against Robert Vincent, Western's no. 1 and gave a spirited fight in the second set before succumbing 6-1, 7-5.

Pete Szpakowski in what turned out to be the final match of his varsity career, lost a  frustrating match to Romain Lenclos of Montreal 4-6, 6-3, 4-6. Szpakowski's serve deserted him that first day and although he broke Lenclos's serve twice in the final set, he lost his three times. A disappointing end to an otherwise fine varsity career.

Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/) who had a very good season up till then played a listless game against another of the solid Carabins losing 2-6, 3-6. Zubair Virjee (Calgary/) won his first round against his Toronto opponent 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, he could not sustain the steady play of his previous match against a stronger opponent and came up short losing 2-6, 1-6.

The tournament, apart from deciding a singles champion, also decided the OUA men's team champions. Played in a new format this year, each player earned a point for their school with a win and the school with the most points won the team title.

The winning school was the Montreal Carabins and deservedly so. All their players had solid performances and won several rounds before bowing out. Only one Carabin made it to the semi-finals and he was beaten by Chan 6-2, 6-2.  University of Toronto placed second, with University of Western Ontario in third place narrowly edging out host York University. Waterloo placed fifth of the seven schools that participated. All the more reason to celebrate Chan's accomplishment for Waterloo this past weekend.
