Warriors lose twice to open season

Friday, October 29 @ Guelph
Guelph 3, Waterloo 0
(25-8, 25-18, 25-21)

The Waterloo Warriors lost their opening match of the season to the Guelph Gryphons Friday evening at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre.

Guelph came out strong in the first set and had their job made easier by some Waterloo errors in taking the set 25-8. After jumping out to an 8-5 lead in the second set, Waterloo settled down and started to side-out to keep the set much closer as the teams battled back and forth. A late Gryphons surge opened up a bigger lead and Guelph ended up winning 25-18. Waterloo led the third set 16-15 at the technical time-out and the teams traded side-outs until 20-20 before the Gryphons again surged ahead late to win 25-21.

“We felt fairly fortunate to get the result we got tonight as Waterloo was the better passing team through most of the match. But our blocking and offense came through when we needed it in a match that was close after the first set,” said Gryphon head coach Paul Funk.

Kylen Van Osch led the Gryphons' offense with 14 points (9 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks) followed by Brooke Lloyd with 11 (8 kills, 3 blocks).

Kayla Ng (London/) did a great job of running the offence and made some incredible plays at the net adding 4 kills, 1 block and 23 assists to help keep the Warrior squad on their game. Meaghan Loveday (Kitchener/) led the offensive charge with 8 kills while fellow freshman, Danielle Kamps (Vineland Station/), came a close second with 6 kills of her own.

Saturday, October 30 @ McMaster
McMaster 3, Waterloo 1
(25-17, 25-17, 18-25, 25-15)

The Warrior women's volleyball team faced a tough opponent in McMaster on Saturday evening in just their second game of the season.  The Warriors were downed 3 sets to 1 and have fallen to 0-2 in the young season.

After losing the first two sets by identical scores of 25-17, Waterloo bounced back and showed their inner fight winning the third set 25-18.

With the momentum in their favour, Waterloo jumped out with a lot of energy in the fourth set but too many errors cost them the set as they fell 25-15 and lost the match 3-1.

Leading the way for the Warriors was Meaghan Loveday (Kitchener/) who had 20 kills, 13 digs while also adding 2 service aces..  Melissa Steinman (Waterloo/) had six kills while Jillian Battenburg added five.
Freshman setter, Mikaela Klie (/), came off the bench and made a difference running the offence with 24 assists, 1 service ace and was the next highest in digs on the team with 9.

The Warriors look to get their season back on track as they host the winless Toronto Varsity Blues (0-4) on Saturday, November 6th as part of their home opener.
