WATERLOO, Ont. - The Warriors were in search of their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon as they hosted the also winless Toronto Varsity Blues. The Blues were able to score a late power play goal in the second and add an empty netter to earn their first victory of the season 2-0 over the Warriors.
The first period saw both teams fighting for every inch of the ice with some tentative play. Both teams did not want to make the first mistake resulting in the opening goal. Goaltenders Martina Michaud (Etobicoke, Ont.) of Waterloo and Kendyl Valenta of Toronto stood tall making big saves for their respective clubs to keep the game scoreless after one.
The game opened up in the second period with end to end action and both teams fighting for the opening goal. Emily Milito of Toronto was showing off her speed and skills taking the puck past the Warrior defenders but rookie goalie Michaud stood tall for her Warriors making big saves. Warrior defenders Sarah Endicott (Toronto, Ont.) and Kathryn Roy (Owen Sound, Ont.) were solid on the backend all game long.
It would take a Toronto power play late in the second period to open the scoring. Brenley Jorgensen would deflect a point shot by Callie Bazak and winger Lindsay Hill showed nice hand eye coordination picking up the rebound to score her first goal of the season.
The Blues would not look back displaying a nice neutral zone trap and Blues goalie Valenta did the rest earning her first shutout of the season. Valenta was unbeatable all game long making timely saves for her Blues. Jorgensen added an empty netter late in the third to give Toronto their first win of the season, handing Waterloo their third straight loss to start the season.
The Warriors (0-3-0) look to get in the win column as they face York this afternoon at the Columbia Icefield Arena at 2:00 pm.
