Kyle Sonnenburg

Kyle enters his second season behind the Warriors’ bench, having returned to his alma mater after a successful 12-year professional career in the German professional ranks. During his playing days with the Warriors, Kyle was known as one of the top defenceman in the country, as he was twice named an All-Canadian (2009, 2011), while claiming OUA all-star honours in all four years of his university career. He also won the OUA west division defenceman of the year award in both 2010 and 2011.

After graduating from UWaterloo, Sonnenburg played nine seasons in Germany's top league, the DEL, before adding another three years in the DEL2. In the spring of 2022, Sonnenburg helped Löwen Frankfurt claim a DEL2 championship, before retiring from pro hockey at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. As a coach, Kyle will use his extensive knowledge of the game and familiarity with the world of the student-athletes to add a welcomed perspective both on and off the ice. Kyle lives in Waterloo with his wife Suncana, and son Bryce.
