Warriors Outlast Lakers in Double Overtime and Advance to McCaw Cup

The Waterloo Warriors and Nipissing Lakers faced off in a high stakes battle, with Waterloo looking to close out the series and Nipissing fighting to stay alive. What unfolded was an intense contest that stretched into a dramatic second overtime before the Warriors emerged victorious.

Both teams came out in the first period with energy, knowing the importance of setting the tone early. The Warriors struck first with a well executed play as Nikki McDonald (Stoney Creek, ON) carried the puck into the zone and dropped it back to Lyndsy Acheson (Summerland, BC), who fired it in the net to open the games scoring. The Lakers responded with two quick goals before the end of the period, seizing a 2-1 lead. Despite trailing, the Warriors, known for their resilience, remained composed heading into the second.

The middle frame saw a battle of offensive pressure and defensive strength. Both teams generated scoring opportunities, but stellar goal tending kept the score locked at 2-1. With neither side able to break through, the game continued, setting the stage for a crucial final period.

The Warriors wasted no time in the third period, as Leah Herrfort (Palmerston, ON) capitalized on a shorthanded opportunity to bring the game level and inject momentum into the Warriors. Minutes later, Nikki McDonald (Stoney Creek, ON) showcased her speed on a breakaway, firing a rocket past the Lakers' goalie to give Waterloo a 3-2 lead. The Lakers, however, refused to back down, finding the equalizer to send the game to overtime with the score tied 3-3.

The first overtime was a showcase of endurance and grit, with both teams trading dangerous scoring chances. The goaltenders stood tall, with Warrior goalie Kara Mark (New Hamburg, ON) making several clutch saves. Neither side could find the back of the net, forcing a second overtime. Despite four periods of action packed play, both teams continued to battle with speed and determination. The breakthrough finally came when Emma Thornton (Kitchener, ON) carried the puck up ice with pace, drove wide past the Lakers' defense, and cut across the slot before sniping the series winning goal.

With this hard fought victory, the Warriors now advance to compete for the McCaw Cup.
