Warriors and Gryphons Face Off

This Saturday evening, the Waterloo Warriors faced off against the Guelph Gryphons. After their last match up ended in a shootout loss, the Warriors knew this battle would be close, but they were determined to come out on top.

Guelph came out strong, quickly asserting a dominant 3-0 lead early in the game. However, before the period closed, the Warriors began their comeback effort with a goal from Keiara Raitt (Ancaster, ON), assisted by Tatum James (Stratord, ON). Despite trailing 3-1 at the end of the period, Waterloo showed the energy and determination needed to fight back.

The Warriors carried their momentum into the second period, finding the back of the net twice. First, Tatum James (Stratord, ON) scored a crucial goal, followed by Sarah Bestic (Waterloo, ON), who capitalized on an opportunity with assists from Jalen Duffy (Burlington, ON) and Emma Thornton (Kitchener, ON). With the game now tied 3-3, both teams showcased their offensive strength. However, before the period ended, Guelph managed to sneak in another goal, reclaiming the lead at 4-3.

The final period saw both teams tightening their defense, effectively neutralizing offensive pressure. The game turned into a back and forth battle, with each team playing smart, efficient hockey. In the closing moments, the Warriors delivered once again, tying the game 4-4 with a clutch goal from Carly Orth (Bolton, ON), assisted by Erika Porter (Mississauga, ON) and Leah Herrfort (Palmerston, ON).

As overtime began, both teams focused on maintaining possession and limiting turnovers. The Warriors held an advantage, controlling much of the play, but neither side was able to break through, sending the game into a shootout.

Both goalies displayed remarkable composure and skill under pressure in the shootout. In the end, the Gryphons managed to score the lone goal of the shootout, securing the win.

Up next, the Warriors will take on the Nipissing Lakers on February 7.
