The Waterloo Warriors got season-best performances out of both their defensive unit and their run game in their week three meeting with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, but the visitors from the nation's capital used the same two facets of the game to edge out the black and gold.
Gee-Gees running back Charles Asselin ran for 184 yards and a touchdown, and defensive back Eric Cumberbatch scored on a fumble recovery to pace Ottawa to a 26-5 win over the Warriors on Black and Gold day at Warrior Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors allowed only 16 first downs and held Ottawa to under 350 total yards, but the Gee-Gees pulled away late to climb to 2-1. Waterloo rushed for 207 yards, as quarterback
Nick Orr (Caledon/) and running back
Anthony Miller (Brampton/) both cracked the 100-yard plateau, but the Warriors fell to 0-3 with the loss.
In front of a large student crowd on a cool, windy afternoon, the Warriors got on the board first midway through the opening quarter when
Cole Crossett (Metcalfe/) split the uprights from 21 yards out. Ottawa kicker Zach Copeland answered in the first minute of the second quarter, connecting on a 23-yard field goal to tie the score.
As the half ticked away, Crossett missed a 38-yard kick into the teeth of the wind, while Copeland used the breeze to help hit a kick of the same distance to make it 6-3 Ottawa. Crossett had another crack from 37 yards on the last play of the first half, but the wind again wreaked havoc, and the Warriors went into halftime trailing by three points.
The two teams exchanged possessions early in the third, before Ottawa's defence made the game's biggest play: on a third-and-one play from midfield, Miller gained the new set of downs and kept his legs churning for extra yards. But with Miller refusing to go down, Cumberbatch slid his arms around the football and pried it out of Miller's grasp and into his own, scampering 57 yards for the fumble recovery touchdown. It was a brilliant play by the veteran Ottawa defensive back, and it extended Ottawa's lead to 13-3.
On the next series, a mix-up in the handoff between Orr and
Quinten Springer (Cambridge/) put the ball on the turf, and again it was recovered by the Gee-Gees. This time, the Warriors defence held Ottawa at the goalline, forcing Copeland to hit from 9 yards out to make it 16-3.
After another Copeland field goal early in the fourth, the Warriors put together their most promising drive behind big runs by Orr and Miller. But the Warriors were stymied deep in Ottawa territory, and turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert a third-and-goal at the Gee-Gees two-yard line.
Ottawa was forced to concede a safety on the ensuing drive, but the Warriors offense couldn't get back into scoring range. Meanwhile, the Gee-Gees salted it away with their in the backfield, as Asselin capped off his day with a 25-yard major to make it 26-5.
The Warriors will now head into their bye week looking to get healthy and refocused on the second half, which will begin at home against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, September 21 at 1pm.
