Nolan Misa (Markham/) led the Waterloo Warriors 2024 with three hits in their 8-5 win over the Western Mustangs on Sunday. Misa had singles in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. Justin Hawke and Ewan Ferguson scored for Western Mustangs with a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively.
The Warriors took a 4-2 lead in the fourth with key singles from Sam Shephard (Belle River/), Misa, and Sam Grant (Toronto/). Jake Ray pitched four innings for Waterloo, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) with four strikeouts. Lucas Shannon started for Western, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) over three innings. Aidan Armitage added two scoreless innings in relief for Waterloo.
Waterloo had 12 hits, with Klaus Aplevich, Misa, and Grant contributing significantly. Western Mustangs had nine hits, with Matt Isaacson and Ryan Nuernberger each getting two. Nuernberger drove in two runs, and Ferguson stole three bases. Western Mustangs stole seven bases in total and turned one double play.Â
In game two of the doubleheader, Klaus Aplevich put Waterloo ahead with a single in the second inning, but an error allowed Western to briefly tie the game. Jayden Kemp's (Nassau, Bahamas/) fielder's choice gave Waterloo a 3-1 lead in the third. The Warriors broke the game open in the seventh with six runs on four hits: Alessandro Strazzeri (Toronto/) and Aidan Clapp each had key singles, while Nico Valvo (Niagara Falls/) hit a three-run homer.
Carson Hepburn (Newmarket/) pitched a strong seven innings for Waterloo, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs, with four strikeouts. Joshua Krautner took the loss for Western, giving up seven runs (two earned) over three and one-third innings.
Waterloo amassed nine hits, with Jai Pawa, Valvo, and Strazzeri each contributing two. Valvo and Strazzeri also drove in three runs apiece. Western's Richard Fong and Adam Awrey had one hit each, with Spencer Shannon leading their team with one RBI. Waterloo will next face Brock Badgers on Saturday.
