GUELPH, ON - The Waterloo Warriors gave a strong performance but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Guelph Gryphons in a competitive match.
Waterloo's goalkeeper, Lorin-Alexander Lopez (Toronto/North Mississauga SC - League 1 Ontario Championship), made several key saves early in the game, including stops on header attempts by Brandon Robertson and Gray Yates. Guelph applied constant pressure with multiple corner kicks and shots from, but Lopez's resilience kept the game scoreless.
Waterloo had their chances too, with shots from Johnny Son (Oakville/Forge FC) and James Arango (Mississauga/North Mississauga League 1), and several corner kicks from Matheus Mello (Toronto/Burlington Soccer Club - League 1) and Nathan Medeiros (/). However, they could not capitalize on these opportunities. Guelph finally broke the deadlock in the 34th minute with a goal from Michael Andoga, despite a few close calls for both sides.
The Warriors came out strong after the break. Adam Shaikh (Ajax/Alliance United L1U20) had a shot saved by Guelph's Jacob Findlay, and James Arango (Mississauga/North Mississauga League 1) converted a penalty in the 54th minute to level the score at 1-1. Guelph regained the lead in the 66th minute when Andoga scored his second goal of the match. Despite further efforts from Waterloo, including shots by Nikolas Antolcic (Kitchener/St. Mary's High School Soccer Team) and Benicio Marcella (Paris/Burlington Bayhawks - League 1) and several corners, Guelph's defense, now led by substitute goalkeeper Nicholas Potalivo, held firm.
Waterloo will look to build on this performance and secure their first win of the season during their upcoming home opener on Saturday, August 31st at 3:15 PM.
