Today, the Waterloo Warriors faced off against the Laurentian Voyageurs in an intense match that ended in a dramatic overtime finish.
The game started with momentum swinging heavily in Waterloo's favor, largely due to Laurentian's foul trouble. The Warriors capitalized on 17 free throw opportunities, converting 13 to build an early advantage. With Alyssa Renaud (Mississauga, ON) leading the scoring effort, Waterloo jumped out to a commanding 23-15 lead by the end of the quarter.
Laurentian's defense tightened significantly in the second quarter, forcing the Warriors into difficult shots and causing five turnovers. The Voyageurs used these opportunities to chip away at the deficit, cutting Waterloo's lead to just four points as both teams headed into halftime.
The third quarter proved to be a stalemate, with both teams matching each other basket for basket. Neither side could establish a significant run, maintaining the four-point gap from halftime. Nehita Oko-Oboh (Ottawa, ON) was strong on rebounding for the Warriors and helped secure key possessions, but the game remained evenly poised heading into the final quarter.
Laurentian came out strong in the fourth, opening with a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Waterloo responded fiercely, keeping the score tight in a back and forth battle. With just 33 seconds remaining and the Warriors up by two, the Voyageurs managed to tie the game with a clutch layup, sending the contest into overtime.
In the extra time, Laurentian seized control and outscored the Warriors to secure a hard-fought 75-70 victory.
The Warriors' next match is set for January 10 against the Windsor Lancers.
