Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Warriors Challenge McGill in Overtime but Fall 4-3

Friday evening at the Columbia Icefield Arena, the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team faced off against the McGill Redbirds in a tightly contested match that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Despite a determined effort by the Warriors, McGill edged out a 4-3 overtime victory.

The game opened with a scoreless first period, highlighted by the Warriors' resilience on the penalty kill. Waterloo successfully shut down multiple McGill power play opportunities, while both teams showcased balanced possessions and fast paced play.

The intensity carried into the second period, as both teams continued to battle for control. McGill finally broke the deadlock with two quick power play goals late in the frame. Refusing to let the deficit grow, the Warriors responded in the closing minutes of the period. Cole Fraser (Quispamsis, NB) connected with Owen Wilson (Oakville, ON) on a crisp passing play to put Waterloo on the board, trimming McGill's lead to 2-1 heading into the final period.

The Warriors came out swinging in the third, and it didn't take long for Sam McKinney (Fredericton, NB) to find the back of the net. Assisted by Jesse Fishman (Thornhill, ON) and Nate Bierd (Calgary, AB), McKinney's goal brought the game to 2-2 and shifted the momentum in Waterloo's favor. Minutes later, the Warriors' relentless energy forced a McGill penalty. On the ensuing power play, Tate Popple (Brandon, MB) scored with assists from McKinney and Bierd, giving the Warriors their first lead of the game at 3-2. McGill refused to back down, capitalizing on a power play of their own to tie the game 3-3 late in the third. With regulation unable to determine a winner, the teams headed to overtime.

Overtime was kept brief, as McGill struck in the opening minute to seal a 4-3 victory.

Up next, Waterloo will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees on November 23 at 4:00 p.m.
