Game Recap: Field Hockey |

The Black and Gold Are Going for Gold

Today, the Warriors showed Ontario that they have what it takes as they defeated the first-place Blues 1-0 in a thrilling matchup. The Varsity Blues have long standing been an OUA dynasty, capturing two out of the last three championship titles. Today marks a very big milestone for the Warriors who are now looking forward to the next step in their journey as they will play for gold tomorrow.

The first half saw both teams get multiple scoring opportunities, both goalies displayed expert skill. Marielle Fernback (Guelph) in net for the Warriors was a key reason for the outcome of today's match. Two thirds of today's saves occurred in the first half of the match showing that each team came out hungry for offense.

The Warriors struck first early in the third quarter when Sarah Schnarr (Kitchener) bested the goalkeeper off of a penalty corner, with Sierra Blackburn (Kitchener) drawing the assist. Schnarr's tally gave Waterloo an imposing lead with just under 30 minutes to play.

Toronto stepped up their play for the remainder of the game and put themselves in position to tie things up, including five penalty corners in the fourth quarter, but were unable to get past the Warriors strong defensive energy and control, or Fernback, who made six saves in the afternoon.

Up next, the Warriors will take on the Guelph Gryphons tomorrow to determine who will be this year's OUA champions. The game is set for 2:30 p.m. again in Toronto.
