For the second straight season women's hockey has earned top spot in the OUA west, clinching it with a 4-2 road win over the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night. In what was Waterloo's final regular season game of the season, the black and gold picked up their 21st win of the season to finish two points clear of second place Guelph. The Warriors' 21-5-0 record was the second best in the OUA while Toronto led the way with a 23-2-2 record.
After Nipissing opened the scoring at 11:09 of the first period, Waterloo rhymed off four straight goals including three in the middle frame to take a 4-1 lead over the Lakers.
Jessie Fennell (Fonthill, ON/) scored her third of the season while
Tatum James (Stratford, ON/) and
Leah Herrfort (Palmerston, ON/) each scored their league leading 15th of the season.
Keiara Raitt (Ancaster, ON/) also found twine with her eighth of the season. Herrfort and James ended up finishing 1-2 in OUA scoring with 35 and 29 points respectively. Both will be key pieces going into the playoffs next week. In net,
Kara Mark (New Hamburg, ON/) was solid with 27 stops for her 13th win of the season.
Waterloo will now prepare for their playoff run as they battle the fourth seeded Brock Badgers in the opening round. Game 1 goes Wednesday night at 7pm at the CIF Arena.
