Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Warriors score late to complete comeback win over Lions

If their effort on Wednesday night was any indication, the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team is ready to mount a big late-season push.

Dan Walker (Sudbury, ON) scored the eventual game-winner on a late five-on-three powerplay, and Julian Sime (Mississauga, ON) made 22 saves as the Warriors topped the York Lions 3-2 at the Mark Cross memorial game at Canlan Ice Sports in North York.

Jacob Cascagnette (Kitchener, ON) and Alex Gritz (Cranberry Township, PA) also scored for the Warriors, who improved to 6-14-1 on the season. Captain Connor Lovie (London, ON) notched two helpers, while Sime got his first victory since late 2022, returning from an extended injury layoff.

The Warriors were full marks right from puck drop, as they outshot the hosts 17-9 in the first period. However, it was York's Xavier Pouliot who scored the only goal of the opening frame, as the Lions carried a 1-0 lead into the second period.

But the lead didn't last long after the intermission, as Cascagnette equalized just 10 seconds into the period. It stood up as the only goal of a chippy second – with both teams fighting for their postseason chances, a total of 40 penalty minutes were doled out in the middle frame.

The Lions re-took the lead with a Lucas Breault goal early in the third, but the Warriors once again squared the score with a fortunate bounce – a shoot-in from centre ice ricocheted off a stanchion and bounced right to Gritz, who beat York keeper Carter Serhyenko top shelf to tie the game at 2-2.

Waterloo's jump started causing more problems for the Lions, who were assessed a pair of minor penalties within a 32-second span midway through the third. The Warriors made no mistake on the two-man advantage, as Walker wristed home a rocket to give Waterloo a 3-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

The Warriors will now look to continue their late-season surge as they visit the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon at 3pm.
