Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors come out of the gate firing in Battle of Waterloo sweep

The Warriors men's soccer team was on fire to open up their 2022 season with two convincing wins over crosstown rivals, Laurier to secure a big six points. The black and gold outscored the Golden Hawks 10-2 in the weekend sweep and seem to enjoy starting their season against Laurier, having beat them twice last year to start the season with a 6-0 aggregate score.

On Friday night on Warrior Field, scored early and often to defeat the visiting Hawks 7-2. Luka Frankovich (Oakville/) got the goal party started early with a goal in the opening minute. The goals just kept on coming in the opening half as two goals from Sebastian Guerrieri (Oakville/), one from Kevin Espiro (Mississauga/) and another from rookie James Arango saw the Warriors take a commanding 5-0 lead into half.

Laurier would get one back in the 49th minute before Nikolas Antolic put the game out of reach. Arango added one more on a penalty kick while the Hawks managed one more in extra time to make the final 7-2.

On Saturday afternoon, Waterloo and Laurier went to battle again this time on Knight-Newbrough field. Both teams had a much more defensive posture in the opening half as the two combatants went into halftime scoreless.

Waterloo however opened the floodgates in the 59th minute with three goals in 10 minutes. Guerrieri scored twice in seven minutes (59' and 66') giving him four goals on the weekend while Arango continued his impressive start to his Warrior career with his third in two games. Jackson Vinci (Edmonton/) closed the door the rest of the way for his second straight win and first clean sheet of the season.

Waterloo will now face a tougher test this coming week with a pair of games against the always competitive York Lions. The first game goes Thursday night in Toronto before they the Warriors and Lions hit Warrior Field on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 3:15pm.
