Pritchard's OT snipe keeps Warriors undefeated

Box Score

For the second time in just over a week, the high-octane offense of the Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team was pushed to overtime in a low-scoring game with the TMU Bold. And for the second time in just over a week, it took the Warriors exactly one shot to end it in the extra session.

Madison Pritchard (Richards Landing, ON/) scored just 50 seconds into the fourth period, and rookie Kara Mark (New Hamburg, ON/) made 27 saves for her first career OUA shutout, as the fifth-ranked Warriors remained undefeated with a 1-0 decision over the Bold on Friday evening in Toronto.

The victory moves Waterloo to 5-0-2-0 (W-L-OTW-OTL) on the season, as the fifth-ranked team in the nation continue their torrid start to the season. Prichard's early-overtime heroics come just eight days after Leah Herrfort's (Palmerston, ON/) game winner against TMU just 9 seconds into the extra frame in the last meeting between the two teams.

The Bold came out of the gates strong, and outshot the Warriors 12-4 in the opening period. But Mark held the fort, and Waterloo escaped the goalless first period.

The visitors found some of their hallmark speed and dominant possession play in the second, and generated a golden opportunity to open the scoring when Jessie Fennell (Fonthill, ON/) was tripped on a breakaway, resulting in a penalty shot. The veteran defender made a strong move to the backhand, but TMU goalie Lauren Griffin stuck right with Fennel to kick it out and keep the score 0-0 after two periods.

By the time the third rolled around, the ice had tilted decidedly in favour of the Warriors. They had a number of chances to find the game's first goal, but couldn't find twine – despite outshooting TMU 13-2 in the final 20 minutes.

But in the 3-on-3 overtime, Waterloo's speed became too much to handle for the hosts. After an early Mark save, Prichard broke down the right-wing side and sniped a wicked wrister under the bar to give Waterloo the 1-0 win.

The Warriors will now look to keep their scorching start going when they visit the last team to defeat them – the Western Mustangs, who upset Waterloo in the 2022 playoffs. Puck drop at Thompson Arena in London is slated for 7pm on Saturday, November 12.
