Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors earn 6 points in opening weekend action over Hawks

It was a dream start to the 2021 OUA season for the men's program, as the black and gold earned six points topping their cross-town rivals Laurier by scores of 1-0 and 5-0 to sweep the Battle of Waterloo series. In a shortened season, every point is crucial and Waterloo ensured they got off to a hot start with not only the maximum amount of points but a massive 5 goal differential in the second contest at Laurier.

In Waterloo's season and home opener the Warrior held Laurier's attack at bay and took advantage of a beautiful cross from Sebastian Guerrieri (Oakville/) in the 58th minute as Matheus Mello (Toronto/) picked up the loose ball at the top of the box, quickly turned and fired it home to give Waterloo a 1-0 lead. That is all the Warriors would need as keeper Simon Grande (Hamilton/) shut the door the rest of the way stopping all 4 shots faced to give Waterloo the 1-0 win.

Two days later, Waterloo made the short trip across University Ave. to play Laurier once again and Waterloo controlled from start to finish to earn another massive three points. Rookie Nikolas Antolic had quite the start to the match with two goals in the opening 30 minutes followed by two more tallies from a rookie, as Matthewe DeMichelle got in on the action scoring twice in the span of 24 minutes to give the Warriors a commanding 4-0 lead. Guerrieri netted his first of the season late in the contest and the Warriors put up another clean sheet, this time with Tony Awad (Oakville/) in net stopping all 3 shots on target.

The Warriors will have their bye week before getting back into action the following week at home on Wednesday (Oct. 6) at 8:15pm against Guelph followed by a road game with the Grypons on Friday (Oct. 8) at 8:15pm.
