It was a night of firsts as the women's basketball program put on a show in the Naismith Classic evening game on Thursday night, cruising past the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 66-54. It was the first victory for Head Coach
Jessica Roque who finally got to see her team in game action after almost two years of no competition. It was also the first Warriors victory on the brand new Carl Totzke Court that was completed just over a year ago.
"It feels great to be back. And even more special that it's the first ever win on the new Carl Totzke Court," said coach Roque. "I'm trying to take in every moment because I remember many times last year really wishing we had games. I know the student-athletes (and staff alike) we're feeling all the pre-game emotions tenfold last night but we tried to leverage that excitement as much as we could. I was pleased with our performance and I know we will only grow and build our confidence from here."
The Warriors got out to a quick start leading 19-15 after the opening 10 minutes and didn't look back on route to a 66-54 victory.
Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON/) led all scorers in the game with 17 points including two 3-pointers while going 9-for-12 from the line.
Beth Howlett (Burlington, ON/) also had a nice night with 15 points while
Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton, ON/) had 11 and seven boards.
Mackenzie Obermayer (Hanover, ON/) rounded out Waterloo's attack with eight points while
Maddy Adams (Drumbo, ON/) (8 rebounds) and
Megan Goar (Waterloo, ON/) (5 rebounds) had a solid nice on the glass.
As a team, Waterloo went 9-for-24 from three point land and had a 50% night at the line going 15-for-30.
Waterloo will be back in action again tonight at the PAC against the York Lions at 8pm.
