Troy Stevenson moves into full-time role as head coach of men's basketball

The Department of Athletics and Recreation is very pleased to announce that Troy Stevenson (Oakville/St. Ignatius of Loyola) has been named the full-time head coach of men's basketball. Stevenson was the interim head coach last season after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant coach. Stevenson becomes the eighth head coach in the 62-year history of the program.

"I am extremely happy to continue to represent this outstanding institution in a full-time role," said Stevenson. "I look forward to growing with the outstanding alumni, community, and student body here at Waterloo. I would like to thank Roly Webster and Brian Bourque for the opportunity, and I cannot wait to be back on campus and in the gym with our student-athletes."

Stevenson graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2015 with a Chemical Engineering degree and was a member of the Warriors for three seasons (2010-13).

Stevenson had the opportunity to play for and work under many great coaches at Waterloo, including Tom Kieswetter (retired) and Greg Francis (now the head coach at Ontario Tech).

Prior to joining Waterloo's coaching staff, Stevenson spent two seasons as an assistant at McMaster and was a part of their run to the CIS National Championship in 2014-15.

"We are excited to have Troy transition into the full-time role and lead this program into a contender," said director of athletics and recreation Roly Webster. "The head coach of any program plays a critical role on and off the court, and though this offseason feels much different, we are thrilled for Troy to fill this important position now, knowing he will provide great support for their academic success, athletic development, and personal wellbeing."

"We felt it was an important step to secure Troy during our current environment in order to have our student-athletes supported as they continue to train in preparation for a 2021 season."

In addition to his OUA experience, Stevenson has been the Vice President of Basketball Operations of the Tri-County Soldiers Basketball and was a head coach of the Guelph Youth Basketball Association from 2014-18 and Waterloo Wolverines Basketball program from 2015-17.

"We have been very impressed with Troy's ability to create a vision of excellence in both academics and athletics," said associate director, Brian Bourque. "He has been incredibly busy this off-season, recruiting top talent from across the country to bolster an already talented roster. His passion and preparedness will position him well to succeed in this role."

Stevenson has brought in six new faces for next season and still in the process of building a strong 2020 class.

"I am very excited to get the guys all together again and start working towards our goal of making the post-season next winter," concluded Stevenson.
