Women's Hockey kicked off the New Year with a 3-2 overtime win over Windsor on Friday night at the CIF Arena thanks to an absolute bomb from
Brooklyn Sarnovsky (Courtice/) in OT. With the win, Head Coach
Shaun Reagan earned his 100th career victory.
Krystin Lawrence (Tecumseh/) got the first tally of 2020 scoring an unassisted goal just 2:54 into the game. Windsor tied it up five minutes later to send the game into the middle frame tied at 1's.
In the second, Windsor went up 2-1 as Avery Mertz tipped in a point shot to give her Lancers the lead into the third.
In the final frame, Waterloo was all over the Lancers in an attempt to find the equalizer but Windsor keeper Jaydlin Spooner was standing tall making save after save.
The Warriors finally broke through after a lengthy 5-on-3 that wore the Lancers down, Waterloo took advantage of a tired Spooner and
Brooklyn Cole (Kitchener/) netted the equalizer after a nifty cross crease feed from
Emma Pye (Oshawa/).
Waterloo continued to pour the pressure on but could not find the winner in regulation as this one would head to extra time.
A late Lancer penalty would give the Warriors a 4-on-3 opportunity in the early going of overtime and they wasted little time as
Taytum Clairmont (Waterloo/) and Sarnovsky worked the PP up high before Clairmont slid over a perfect pass to Sarnovsky who laid into the shot and fired home a bomb to secure the extra point for the black and gold.
Waterloo outshot Windsor 46-31 with
Mikayla Schnarr (Waterloo/) turning aside 29 shots for her seventh win of the season.
Waterloo improved to 10-4-1 and sit in second in the OUA standings just two points back of first place Toronto. Waterloo is back on home ice today at 2:30pm against the visiting York Lions.
