The Warriors men's basketball team got a complete team effort from top to bottom and competed for a full 40 minutes to cruise past the Toronto Varsity Blues 102-72 on Friday night at the PAC.
Waterloo outscored Toronto 27-10 in the second quarter and then again 27-9 in the final quarter to earn the 30 point victory. With the win, the Warriors improved to 4-11 on the season and keep their playoff hopes alive. The loss dropped Toronto to 4-9.
Waterloo had their best shooting game of the year, operating at 53.7% while Toronto shot just 33.8% from the field. Waterloo's 13 3-pointers and 17 (of 19) free throw's were also a big factor in the victory.
Justin Malnerich (Cambridge/St. Benedict's Catholic Secondary) led the way with 26 points, including 16 in the second half. He finished 9-for-16 from the field with seven 3-pointers.
Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) was outstanding offensively as well with 24 points, going 10-for-19 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.
Three other Warriors hit double digits as
Jayden Grewal (Oakville/Kings Christian Collegiate) had 18 while
Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) had 13 and
David Ramon Prados (Madrid, Spain/Virgen de Atocha (North Platte College)) with 12. On the glass, Hodzic and
Cameron Penner (Collingwood/Collingwood Collegiate Institute) each had a game high 10 rebounds. Waterloo finished with 40 rebounds compared to Toronto's 31.
The Warriors will now hit the road for three straight road games, starting with Windsor this Wednesday night before returning home for four straight home games to close out the regular season.
