Warriors dominate York and Brock

17988Waterloo 6, York 1
The Warriors had one of their best weekend of results on Saturday when they hosted the York Yeomen at the Waterloo Tennis Club.

New pairs were put together for this weekend matches. With several rookies on the team, it is to be expected that rankings and compatible pairings are still works in progress.  All three doubles pairs got the job done when they swept the double matches and gained the one but always important doubles point to put Waterloo off to a good start in the singles round.

York's no. 1 produced the first point for his team when his Waterloo counterpart retired with the score  a set apiece. Waterloo's Pavle Milic (Toronto), still not fully recovered from last week's ailment, retired when the score was tied up at a set apiece.  He did well to win the first set 6-4, after being down 0-4.  Unfortunately he could not sustain the effort and lost the second set 1-6.  It was to be the only loss for the Warriors on the day.  Milic's team mates all won their matches handily in straight sets except at #5 which went to three sets.

While this win was to be savoured, York was without the services of two or three of their top men. These are sure to surface at the OUA championships so this is not the end of the story. Last year, the Warriors had a 5-2 regular season win over York only to be whipped 1-6 by them at the season ending tournament when the two teams were drawn to meet each other in the first round. Still, it was a solid performance by the Warriors on Saturday and will go a long way to sustain their confidence over the rest of the season.

The Warriors had another home match the following day, Sunday.  This time to the Brock Badgers.

Still experimenting with the doubles teams, the Warriors introduced another new pairing against the Badgers. For the second time in as many days, the doubles teams swept the opposition, albeit, with #2 and #3 teams having to win in tie-breaks.

In singles, Eitan Rozin (Toronto/) led the Warriors playing at #1, where he had very little trouble dispatching his opponent. As if on cue, his #2 and #3 teammates followed suit with relatively easy wins.  This gave Waterloo  the tie so the next three singles matches were determined by playing pro sets to eight in lieu of the normal best of three sets. Two rookies playing at #5 and #6 recorded their first singles varsity victory.

The Warriors had a great weekend of play and were encouraged by their success but still have some ways to go. The next weekend, Sept 28, the Warriors will face a much sterner test when they host the Mustangs, the defending 2018 OUA champions and finalist at the Universities National Championships earlier this year in August. On Sunday 29, they will be hosts again, this time to the Guelph Gryphons, the first of two exhibition matches on their schedule.
