The Waterloo Warriors faced off against Concordia University Saturday, and McGill Sunday, splitting the weekend record, going 2-2.
Â
SaturdayÂ
Â
In the first game, the Warriors would fall behind early 7-0 and eventually come up short, but there were bright spots nonetheless. Second-year infielder,
Liam Kelly (Scarborough/) was a key producer in this one, picking up two hits and a pair of RBI's. Another standout was
Eli Dumper (Toronto/), the rookie pitched up a couple of hits as well and an RBI.
Â
Out of the bullpen,
Crawford Passy (Kitchener/) and
Varun Kuo (Mississauga/) combined for 5.1 innings of one-run baseball, giving the Warriors a chance to get back in the game. Eventually, Concordia would take this one by a score of 11-6.
Â
The script flipped in game 2, as the Warriors shut down Concordia from start to finish.
Â
The Warriors got on the board early, thanks to
Luke Zettel (Walkerton/) and
Justin Sargeson (Kitchener/) ground outs which both cashed in a run. After that, it was cruise control as
Eli Dumper (Toronto/) would continue his hot day, but doing so on the mound, going 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.Â
Â
Stephen Whalen (Heidelberg/) would pick up a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, to provide the Warriors with a pair of insurance runs.
Nicholas Levinski (Calgary/) would come in to close out the 4-0 win.
Â
SundayÂ
Â
McGill would take game one easily on Sunday, winning 13-1, but the Warriors would bounce back and put together a well-rounded win in the backend of the doubleheader.Â
Â
Early on, McGill would grab a 3-1 lead, but the Warriors chipped away, tying and taking the lead in the fourth inning.
Jorden Carthy (Kitchener/) would drive in a run with a single which was followed up by a
Stephen Whalen (Heidelberg/) carbon copy.Â
Â
The Warriors would go on to win the ballgame, as Veteran RHP
Stephen Gade (Guelph/) would shut down McGill hitters once given the lead. He racked up seven strikeouts, in a 119 pitch effort over seven innings.Â
Â
The Warriors will be back at it next weekend in Toronto, facing off against Ottawa and Ryerson in OUA interlock play.Â
