Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Warriors fall in battle of Waterloo

The Waterloo Warriors just couldn't buy a goal in the Battle of Waterloo.

Laurier goaltender Olivier Lafreniere turned aside 42 saves for his first career OUA shutout, as the Golden Hawks topped the Warriors 2-0 at the annual Battle of Waterloo game at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on Thursday night.

Former Kitchener Ranger Jake Henderson and rookie Mac Lewis scored for the Hawks, who clinched a playoff spot with the victory. Meanwhile, the Warriors will need a victory in their final game of the season against the Windsor Lancers, as well as some help to earn the final postseason slot in the OUA West division.

Waterloo netminder Julian Sime (Mississauga/North Bay Battalion, OHL) was excellent in the loss, turning aside 30 shots. The Warriors poured on the pressure throughout the night, including in the third period, where they outshot the Golden Hawks 18-6.

Henderson opened the scoring off an offensive zone faceoff late in the first, when he ripped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Sime, a former teammate with the North Bay Battalion.

The game's physicality and playoff intensity persisted through a scoreless second period, but Lewis' first career goal – a tip of an Alex Black point shot – doubled the Laurier lead midway through the third. Waterloo continued to come in waves, but they were unable to solve Lafreniere.

The Warriors will now wrap up their regular season with a must-win game against the Lancers at home on Friday, February 8. Puck drop is slated for 7pm at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
