It was one of those matches you just did not want to see end. Back and forth, hard hitting, incredible saves, strong net play, and everything in between. But unfortunately their had to be a loser and the Warriors came up just short in the five set marathon match to the Ryerson Rams.
The No. 2 Rams outlasted the No. 5 Warriors, winning the fifth set 16-14 to improve to 6-0 on the season while Waterloo dropped to 2-2.
After winning a tight first set by a score of 25-23 the Rams won the next two 25-12, 25-23 but Waterloo fought their way back to win the fourth 25-23 sending the match to a fifth. Ryerson opened up a 5-1 lead in the fifth before Waterloo earned six of the next seven points to go up 7-6. Back and forth they would go before Ryerson went up for a block at 15-14 that would fall back on the side of the Warriors to end the match.
Waterloo received several outstanding performances including a 16 kill performance from
Sarah Glynn (Fredericton/). Two other Warriors were in double digits with
Karen Fan (Oakville/) putting away 12 kills and
Mackenzie Vallee (Waterdown/) tallying 10. At the net,
Serena Otshudi (Stoney Creek/) put on a clinic with eight blocks, four of them solo while Glynn and
Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) each had two. Gagne finished with 37 assists in the match and also a game high 14 digs.
Jenna Gravina (Burlington/) was also strong in her passing and defensive posture with 11 digs in a losing effort.
For the Rams it was Jasmine Rivest and Cailin Wark doing most of the damage with 20 and 16 kills respectively.
The Warriors will be back to the PAC next weekend with a pair of matinees. First on Saturday against Windsor followed by Western on Sunday. Both matches start at 12-noon and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
