Men's basketball got their regular season underway after an impressive pre-season, falling to the Western Mustangs by 10, 93-83.
The Warriors couldn't recover for a slow start that saw them go down 27-16 after the opening quarter. Waterloo got it back to within five several times thanks to the 3-ball but Western continued to answer the black and gold and escaped with the 10-point victory.
The Warriors hit five of their six 3's in the second half led by
Justin Malnerich (Cambridge/St. Benedict's Catholic Secondary) who had three and
Jayden Grewal (Oakville/Kings Christian Collegiate) with two from beyond the arc. Grewal and
Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) each had a team high 19 points in the loss while Malnerich and
Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) each had 14. Petrov also had four assists and five boards.
Nikola Farkic led all scorers putting up 26 for the Mustangs in the win.
The Warriors will continue their five game road trip next weekend with crossover action in what is their toughest trip of the season to the Nations Capital to face Carleton and Ottawa. Waterloo will face Carleton on Friday night at 8pm and Ottawa on Saturday at 8pm. Both games can be seen live on OUA.tv.
