The Warriors went down to the GTA for the weekend, playing in OUA interlock action. The club would go 1-2, facing off against the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Ryerson Rams and Toronto Varsity Blues.
Waterloo 10, Ottawa 8
In the opening game of the weekend, Rookie RHP
Crawford Passy (Kitchener/) would make a fill-in start, taking the hill against the Gee-Gees. He would allow three runs in the first inning, but after the Warriors struck back with two runs themselves, Passy would settle in.
The score would stay put at 3-2 until the fourth inning when the Warriors bats would break out.
Mackenzie Strong (Mississauga/) knocked in a run with a single, and
Stephen Whalen (Heidelberg/) followed up with one of his own; driving in a pair, while
Jorden Carthy (Kitchener/) hit his second sac-fly of the game.
The book on Passy would close after four innings, as he wouldn't allow a run after the first inning, and the score would be 6-3 after four innings.
Ottawa would soon storm back for three runs in the top of the fifth, tying the game up, but the Warriors would fight right back; scoring three runs themselves an inning later as a result of multiple errors.
The Gee-Gees were unable to re-take the lead after the sixth inning and would be shut down by
Daniel Reed (Thornhill/), as he threw 2.1 innings of dominate relief to clinch the victory.
Ryerson 4, Waterloo 2
The Warriors would play host to the Rams early Saturday morning in what was a great pitching matchup.
Captain
Jorden Carthy (Kitchener/) took the hill and was brilliant on this day, going eight innings allowing a run and striking out six batters for the Warriors. He pounded the zone with his fastball and mixed in his curveball, which was a dandy.
Unfortunately, the Warriors bats were quiet as well, as the only runs would score runs on RBI hits from Strong.
It looked like Strong would have a chance to add to his big day and change the complexion of the game, as in the ninth, with the Rams clinging on to a 4-2 lead, he would crush a ball right into the wind in right-field which would stay in the park and wrap up the ballgame.
In the last match of the weekend, the Warriors would face off against Toronto, one of the stronger teams in the league. On the mound for Toronto would be Mateos Kekatos, last year's league Cy Young award winner.
After falling behind early, 3-0, the Warriors would jump on Toronto's ace. The bottom of the order would cling together a bunch of hits, and as the lineup would turn over, the top would follow suit.
Liam Kelly (Scarborough/),
Varun Kuo (Mississauga/),
Mackenzie Strong (Mississauga/) and Stephan Whalen would all come through with huge hits in a five-run inning.
Toronto 9, Waterloo 7
Toronto would strike back for a pair in both the second and third inning, taking a 7-5 lead.
Out of the pen,
Luis Grisanti (Maturin/) and
Jake Roberts (Scarborough/) silenced the Rams hitters after the third inning, holding them to just two more runs in the last six innings.
The Warriors would tack on a few runs, but would not be able to retake the lead, falling 9-7.
It was an impressive showing against a strong pitcher and a quality team in Toronto, but unfortunately the Warriors ended up on the losing side this time.
The Warriors will be back next weekend to play host to McMaster, looking to get right back above the .500 mark.
