Women's hockey picked up four out of a possible six points in the opening weekend of 2019, falling to Nipissing 3-2 in a shootout and blanking Laurentian 1-0.
On Friday night in North Bay, Nipissing and Waterloo went back and forth all night as two of the top OUA teams previewed what could be a very competitive playoff matchup. Nipissing got on the board first before
Dollee Meigs (Owen Sound/) evened the score at 1's with her fifth of the season.
Nipissing took a 2-1 lead into the final frame before
Emma Cheeseman (Waterloo/) tied the game up just 20 seconds into the third period with
Maryn Caragata (Etobicoke/) and
Taytum Clairmont (Waterloo/) picking up the helpers.
The game would go to overtime where Nipissing received a power play and had all sorts of chances but
Amanda Smith (Burlington/) stood tall to send the game to a shootout.
Samantha Burbridge (Brantford/) scored on Waterloo's second attempt while the Lakers found the back of the net twice to take it 3-2 in the shootout. Smith turned aside 22 of 24 shots in the loss.
On Saturday, Waterloo needed just one goal to pick up three crucial points as Meigs scored her second of the weekend and sixth of the season to sink the Voyageurs 1-0.
Alysha Letwin (Barrie/) was solid in net turning aside all 29 shots faced for her second shutout and third win of the season.
Waterloo now sits in third spot in the OUA with a 9-3-2 record and 28 points just two back of first place Guelph. The Warriors will be back on home ice for the first time in 2019 when they battle York on Friday night at the CIF. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
