Men's tennis battles tough weekend competition

McGill 7, Waterloo 0

The Waterloo Warriors felt the heat of a red-hot team when the McGill Redmen paid a visit to Waterloo and handed their host a  7-0 beating.

Though the weather was blustery with high winds and a tremendous downpour of rain during the afternoon, the only concern for the Warriors, playing in the shelter of the dome at the Waterloo Tennis club, was how to tame the fire power of the Redmen.

As is usual, the match kicked off with the doubles component which more often than not, provides good entertainment.  Waterloo no.3 team of Lazar Vukoje (Guelph/) and rookie freshman Alexander Tingling (Oakville/), a pair still finding their range fell first 1-8 to Philip Rivard and  Guillaume Lemieux. They were followed by no. 2 team of Peter Hull (Toronto/) and Saifullah Shoaib (Karachi, Pakistan/) losing 6-8 to a talented pair of Bijan Shahriaria and Chaska Rakotondrainibe. Hull and Shoaib played well but the Redmen were the better players and all credit to the Warrior team for keeping it a close match.  Waterloo's no. 1 pair on Friday was rookie Eitan Rozin (Toronto/) and Josh Worme, two talented shot-making lefties lost a heart-breaker 7-8 (7). The Redmen came from behind at 6-7 to even the score, breaking Rozin to level the score at 7-7 to force the tie-break.  The physicality of the McGill pair made a difference in edging the Warriors in the tie-break.

The singles matches that followed all went McGill's way but not as easily as the overall score may suggest.  Three of the six singles were close. Peter Hull (Toronto/) at no. 3 retired with the score 4-6, 5-5 when he suffered cramps to his playing hand.  The match, up to that point, consisted of mostly long and hard-hitting rallies which took its toll on Hull. An encouraging performance from rookie, Alexander Tingling (Oakville/) playing at no.4, bowed out in two- hard fought sets losing 4-6, 6-7 (1). In the second set, Tingling fought his way to 5-5 from 2-5 down.  His progress has grown steadily since his debut as a rookie two weekends ago. The last match on court was the most tension-filled. The tennis was of a high quality with both players coming up with brilliant shots or returning their opponent's at critical times.  Even though the tie had already been won by McGill, the quality of the match between the no.1s absorbed everyone's attention with its shot-making, tight even score, with every point played and won being precious.  Another very fine effort from Rozin. The Waterloo rookie continues to impress.

Western 5, Waterloo 2

It was a rough weekend for the Warriors playing two strong teams the past weekend. The Western Mustangs came to town Sunday and showed off their depth of experienced players when they beat the home team 5-2.
With Waterloo's no.1 doubles team in action on Sunday, they made a difference by winning their match and with another win from the no.3 pair, Waterloo gained the doubles point and a promising start to the day was made.
Unfortunately, singles wins were hard to come by with the Mustangs winning their matches comfortably except for a three set battle from no.2 Eitan Rozin (Toronto/) and a three set win by no.5 Saifullah Shoaib (Karachi, Pakistan/).  Shoaib and his opponent possessing similar game styles was a match of attrition but it was Shoaib, nursing a sore arm, who came through in the end.

It was a weekend of tough tennis and losses, but it was invaluable in that it provided the Warriors exposure to quality play which hopefully will help them to better prepare for the rest of the season and the OUA Championships on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Warriors final weekend of regular play ends next weekend playing York Friday 28 at 3 p.m. and Guelph the following day at noon. Both games take place at the Waterloo Tennis club.
