Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Warriors drop controversial nailbiter to Blues

The Waterloo Warriors played one of their best defensive games of the season in a massive tilt with the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday night at Varsity Arena. Unfortunately for the black and gold, Toronto found but one crack in their defensive armour - and that was enough to decide the game.

Max Lindsay scored in the third period to break a 0-0 tie, leading the Blues to a 2-0 win over Waterloo, and a huge two points in the standings with the season only a week from completion.

The win helped break the three-way tie between Waterloo, Toronto, and Windsor for the eighth and final playoff spot in the OUA West division. Thanks to the Lancers' victory over Brock on Saturday, the Warriors now sit two points back of both Windsor and Toronto, with two games remaining on the schedule.

Waterloo saw their record fall to 9-14-3, while the Blues improved to 11-14-1. Matt Campagna, who assisted on Lindsay's game winner, added an empty netter for the Blues late in the third.

The decision was not without its controversy though, as the Warriors looked to tie the game late on a shot by captain Mike Moffat (Waterloo/). But the goal was waved off, and Waterloo couldn't find the equalizer in the final moments.

Mike Morrison (Hamilton/) turned aside 25 shots in the defeat, while Toronto keeper Andrew Hunt notched his second consecutive shutout with 22 saves. The Blues went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Warriors – with only eight total seconds of power play time in the game – went 0-for-1.

The deciding goal was scored on a four-on-four span early in the third, when Campagna broke in and kept control of a bouncing puck long enough to center it for Lindsay. He, too, corralled the ricocheting puck, and turned to smack it past a frozen Morrison for the deciding goal in the game.

With under four minutes to play, Moffat's wicked wrister beat Hunt cleanly from a sharp angle. But the officials immediately waved off the goal – possibly deeming that Hunt wasn't able to make the save due to some Warriors traffic in front – and the game remained 1-0 until Campagna's empty-netter.

The Warriors will now look to bounce back and give their playoff hopes more momentum when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks in the annual Battle of Waterloo at the Aud. Puck drop from the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium is scheduled for 7:15pm.
