Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Warriors unable to pick up valuable weekend points

The Warriors women's hockey team took on Windsor and Western in weekend action and came away empty handed in a pair of 1-goal losses.

On a snowy night in Windsor, the Warriors and Lancers took part in a wild game that went back and forth all night long. The Lancers scored the go ahead goal at 6:50 of the third and held on for the 5-4 win over the Warriors.

Emma Pye (Oshawa/) had a career night with the hat trick while rookie defender Selena Dirven (Watford/) also had a strong night with three helpers in the game.

Samantha Burbridge (Brantford/) scored the other Warrior goal while Maryn Caragata (Etobicoke/) had a multiple point night with two assists in the loss.

On Saturday evening, the Warriors took to the CIF for their regular season home game of the year against the Western Mustangs. It was senior night as five of the most accomplished Warriors playing in their final year with the black and gold were honoured prior to puck drop.

Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove/), Rachel Marriott (Waterloo/), Stephanie Sluys (Clinton/), Dana Fairbarn (Maple/), and captain Amy Barnard (Cambridge/) were all treated to an emotional pre-game ceremony with family and friends on hand.

To the game itself, Waterloo took a 1-0 lead on a beautiful toe drag and finish by Sarah Rettinger (Kitchener/), her third of the season assisted by Marriott and Brooklyn Sarnovsky (Courtice/).

The Warriors held onto that 1-0 lead until it all went sideways late in the second as the visiting Mustangs scored three times in 44 seconds to take a 3-1 lead into the final frame.

Marriott cut the deficit in half just 56 seconds into the third but Western held on for the remaining 19 minutes to secure their three points.

Despite not picking up any points, Waterloo remains in the eighth and final playoff spot with 30 points, one up on Laurentian who play today in St. Catharines vs. Brock.

The Warriors have a huge road trip to close out their season up north against Nipissing and the aforementioned LaAurentian Voyageurs. Waterloo will need at least one win in those two final games to secure a post-season berth.
