The Warriors opened up their 2018 Holiday Tournament with a five set victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday evening at the PAC.
It was a tight battle from start to finish with the Heat taking the opening set 26-24 before Waterloo bounced back to even the match at 1's, winning the second set 25-17. The Heat took a 2-1 lead, claiming the third set 25-22 before Waterloo won the next two 25-20, 15-12, for the 3-2 win.
Nolan Spencer (Kitchener/) had a strong game with a game high 19 points with 18 kills and two assisted blocks.
Jacob Nesbitt (Wakefield/) was the next best Warrior with 14.5 points on eight kills, four service aces, and three blocks.
Deman Dulat (Mississauga/) and
Kevin LeBreux (Cumberland/) rounded out the black and gold attack with 11 and 8 kills respectively while
Colm Guyn (Lethbridge/) was outstanding setting up the offence with 29 assists.
Defensively
Waylon Chen (Markham/),
Matthew Lee (Pickering/) and LeBreux each had six digs.
In the first match of the day, Montreal defeated Winnipeg 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23).
Montreal and UBCO will battle in the first game on Day 2 today at 4pm followed by Winnipeg and the Warriors at 6pm.
