Women's hockey earned an important 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon in St. Catharines, topping the Brock Badgers 2-1 in their final game of the calendar year.
The Warriors out shot the Badgers 35-22, taking it to the home side from start to finish.
Angela MacDonald (Kitchener/) scored her third of the season with just 36 seconds left in the opening period, banging home a loose puck in the slot after a nice no-look feed behind the net from
Maryn Caragata (Etobicoke/).
Taytum Clairmont (Waterloo/) picked up the second helper.
Waterloo made it a 2-goal advantage as
Selena Dirven (Watford/) wired a point shot that got past the Jensen Murphy. Clairmont set up the play nicely after gaining the zone and zipping the cross-ice pass over to Dirven. The helper made it a two point night for Clairmont while
Sarah Rettinger (Kitchener/) was given the second assist on the Dirven goal.
Brock made a late push as Annie Berg beat
Amanda Smith (Burlington/) at 13:31 of the third but the fifth year netminder shut the door the remaining 6:29 to secure three points for her black and gold. Smith made 21 stops for the win while Murphy turned aside 33 in a strong losing effort for her Badgers.
Waterloo now sits in a five way tie for second in the OUA with 24 points in a very log jammed top portion of the standings. Ryerson sits in the top spot, just one ahead of Waterloo with 25 points.
The Warriors will return to action on January 4 in North Bay against one of the teams they are currently tied with, Nipissing.
