Women's hockey won their fourth straight game beating the top-seeded Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon 5-2. Waterloo rallied from 2-0 down after the first, scoring five unanswered to pick up a huge three points.
Four different goal scorers found the net in what continues to be the story for the black and gold this season.
"This is the most complete team we have had since I have been here," said fourth year forward
Alison Hanson (North York/). "We're getting contributions from all four lines and our defence, and the results are showing. Today was a big win after a slow start."
The aforementioned Hanson scored twice including the first for Waterloo at 2:14 of the second off a nice deflection and then sealed the victory with an unassisted empty netter, her fifth of the season.
Samantha Burbridge (Brantford/) had a solid game as well, scoring the tying goal early in the second after a determined effort on the power play to fire home a rebound on the backhand.
Locked at two's heading into the final frame, Waterloo took advantage of four straight penalties from the Gaels and used it to their advantage to find the go-ahead marker. Rookie defender
Jessie Fennell (Fonthill/) fired a seeing eye shot that eluded Stephanie Pascal to put the Warriors up 3-2.
Just four minutes later
Dollee Meigs (Owen Sound/) made it a two goal cushion on the nice individual effort, stepping out from the corner and banking it off the post and in.
Hanson's empty netter would seal the deal for a big home victory.
Amanda Smith (Burlington/) was stellar in net making 29 stops for the win. She was especially spectacular in the opening period, turning aside 17 of 19 shots.
With the win Waterloo improves to 7-2-1 on the season and moves into a tie with Nipissing for third spot in the OUA with 21 points. Waterloo will close out their 2018 home schedule tomorrow afternoon against UOIT. Puck drops at 2:30pm.
