The Warriors earned a hard fought victory over Toronto on Saturday night, topping the Varsity Blues 76-73 for their first win of the season.
Beth Howlett (Burlington) knocked down her third 3-pointer of the contest with 21.6 seconds remaining to give her Warriors a four point advantage and Waterloo would hang on for the win.
"On a night where our defence wasn't as strong as usual, I was pleased by our offensive performance with four players in double figures," said head coach
Craig Nickel.
"Kaitlyn had a fantastic overall game, and we got enormous efforts off the bench from
Meghan Sharp (Kitchener/) and
Ella Mahler (Hamilton/)."
Waterloo and Toronto operated at essentially the same field goal percentage, with Toronto at 34.8% and Waterloo at 33.3% but the different came from the free throw line and boards as Waterloo hit 23 free throws compared to 19 for Toronto and out rebounded the visitors 38-34.
It was an impressive night for Waterloo's rookies as three of them hit double digits while
Meghan Sharp (Kitchener/) also hit double figures in the win.
Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford/) led the way with 19 points and three assists while
Vanessa Hughes (Hamilton/) put up 13 while adding four helpers.
Beth Howlett (Burlington) and Sharp each finished with 11 points while
Breanna Hudspeth (Burlington/) had a solid night on the boards with seven rebounds, including six on the defensive end.
Waterloo will look to make it two in a row next weekend at York on Friday night.
