The Warriors men's soccer team earned one of their biggest wins in the past decade, upsetting the No. 8 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders 1-0 in the first round of the OUA playoffs on Wednesday night in Hamilton.
"This feeling is infectious," said head coach
Mark Worton after the win. "You represented your jersey tonight boys, you were Warriors."
Team leader in goals,
Sebastian Guerrieri (Oakville/) earned a penalty kick in the opening minute of the second half and made no mistake firing it past McMaster's keeper Tristan Joyce.
In the 70th minute the Marauders earned a penalty kick of their own as Yunus Mollayev stepped onto the spot. Mollayev striked it to his left but
Matt Papadopoulos (Kitchener) sprawled to his right to make an enormous stop to keep the game a 1-0 score in favour of the the Warriors.
McMaster kept the pressure coming but Waterloo's defence stood tall while Papadopoulos made several big saves in the final 20 minutes to secure the 1-nil victory.
Waterloo will now travel to Toronto on Sunday to face the York Lions at 3pm in the OUA quarter-finals with a berth to the OUA Final Four on the line
