Warriors drop close battle to tough Varsity Blues squad

The Warriors dropped a pair of weekend games to Toronto and Queen's but battled every step of the way.

In their 3-1 loss to Toronto, the Warriors and Varsity Blues battled back and forth all game with the score at 0's until the final two minutes of the first half when Toronto was awarded a penalty to go ahead 1-0. Immediately after, Waterloo was awarded a short corner with no time left on the clock and Fleur Diepstraten put it away to make it a 1-1 tie.

Waterloo held a highly skilled Blues squad off the scoresheet in the early going of the second half with strong defending but Toronto kep coming and put up two goals in the final 16 minutes to take the win 3-1. Rookie keeper Marley Dowling (Waterloo/) was outstanding in a losing effort.

In Waterloo's second game, the Warriors were up against a tough Queen's squad for the first time this season and the Gaels got the best of Waterloo in a 4-0 win over the black and gold. Queen's had a 2-0 lead into the half and Waterloo picked up the intensity in the second but could not get one past the Gaels keeper. Queen's scored two late goals after Waterloo pulled their goalie to make it a 4-0 final.

"I'm very proud of the growth we've made since last year and especially how much work our young team has put in to play both sides of the game," said head coach Maria Leahy (Waterloo). "We have an incredibly strong defensive unit this year and our young offence is starting to get the results we need to be successful. We're looking forward to hosting the OUA Championship in a couple weeks and to have a strong performance at home."
