Warriors fall to Mustangs in game two

Box Score

The Waterloo Warriors were 37 seconds away from their first-ever OUA playoff series victory. But Western Mustangs forward April Clark had different ideas.

Clark tied the game in the final minute of regulation, before scoring a shorthanded game-winner in overtime to give the Mustangs a 2-1 win in game two of the best-of-three OUA quarterfinal series on Friday night in London.

The Western win evens the series at one game apiece, and sets up a third and deciding game on Sunday afternoon at the Columbia Icefield Arena.

Samantha Burbridge (Brantford) scored her first career goal for the Warriors, while Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) made 29 stops in defeat. Surprise starter Shelby Ryan kicked aside 32 shots in the Western net, earning the victory.

After a scoreless two periods, Burbridge tipped home a Digness point blast at 12:19 of the third to put the Warriors in front. But just as it looked like Waterloo would claim victory, Clark deflected a point shot of her own past Sluys on a 6-on-4 power play with just 37 seconds left in the third.

The Warriors had plenty of chances to end the series in the extra session, as the Mustangs were assessed four consecutive minor penalties in overtime. But the Western penalty kill limited Waterloo's chances, and Ryan made some huge stops to keep the game going. Then, with the Mustangs shorthanded and a delayed penalty coming up against the Warriors, Clark broke in on the right wing and sniped the game-winning goal over the shoulder of Sluys to claim victory for the hosts.

The Warriors will now look to shake off the defeat and put the series away in game three at home. Puck drop is slated for 2:30 pm on Sunday, February 26 at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
