Warriors narrowly miss playoffs with two tight losses

Box Score The Warriors men's basketball team were riding a season high 3-game and looked poised for a playoff berth but two tight losses to close out the season put an end to any post-season hopes.

On Friday Waterloo dropped their game to Lakehead 66-62 and then followed it up with an even closer loss, 76-74 to Guelph on Saturday. The Warriors battled every step of the way this season picking up some very impressive wins, most notably their thumping of Windsor on Fantastic Alumni Day.

"I am extremely proud of the way our guys battled this season, especially down the stretch," said head coach Justin Gunter.

Friday night, the Warriors were led by Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) who had 22 points in his 34 minutes of action.  Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) and Jon Ravenhorst (Sarnia/Sarnia Northern) were also in double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.  Mike Pereira (Kitchener/Resurrection Secondary) had a strong night on the boards with 11 rebounds.

On Saturday, Hodzic wrapped up what was a brilliant rookie campaign with 20 more points and nine rebounds.  Petrov was again stellar as well with 19 while Ravenhorst had 12.  Pereira was again a beast on the boards with 19 making him the OUA leader in rebounds per game and the third best in the country with 10.7.

The future is no doubt bright for the Warriors with the SJAM Connection having quite the first season in the OUA.  Hodzic led the Warriors in points per game with 16.6 while Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) was third with 10.6 points per game.  Hardy rounded out a strong season from the trio with 9.7 points per game.

"Our rookies came into their own and have a bright future in this league.  We competed with some of the top teams in the OUA and I look forward to building on a lot of positives in the off-season.  Finally, I would like to thank our graduating seniors for a great season and wish them all the best in all of their future endeavors."
