Box Score The Warriors women's hockey team earned one of their most monumental victories in program history, blanking the No. 2 team in the country, the Guelph Gryphons, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the CIF.
Guelph were riding a 10 game winning streak, their last loss coming on November 18 to Nipissing. With the win, Waterloo clinched a post-season berth for the second straight season and improved to 13-7-2 with just two games remaining. Their 39 points has them fourth in the OUA, two points ahead of Western and three above Queen's.
Waterloo was on the right side of three fortunate bounces that ended up in the back of Guelph's net.
Maryn Caragata (Etobicoke) was the benefeciary of the opening goal at 15:00 of the opening period, that was shot in by Guelph's own defender.
Alison Hanson (Toronto) and
Carolyn Burke (Mississauga) picked up the helpers on the opening goal, and eventual game winner.
Burke made it 2-0 just three minutes into the second frame as she banged home a loose puck after a mad scramble out front of Valerie Lamenta. Caragata picked up her second point of the game with a helper on the Burke goal while
Rebecca Rutherford (Ajax) was also in on the goal.
Waterloo earned another good bounce 10 minutes later as
Marissa Redmond (Ajax) fired in the puck off a Guelph defender's shinpads past Lamenta.
Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) and
Brooklyn Sarnovsky (Oshawa) were credited with the helpers on the big insurance marker.
Between the pipes,
Taylor Reimer (Morden) earned the shutout, her third of the season stopping all 25 shots faced. Reimer now has three shutouts in her last five starts and has only allowed two goals over that span. She leads the league in both save percentage (.950) and goals against average (1.17) in 10 starts.
Waterloo will close out their season next weekend with a home game against Ryerson on Saturday followed by their last game, on the road against UOIT in Oshawa. There is still a lot of movement that can happen in the OUA standings, especially with three points up for grabs with a regulation win.
