Warriors fall to Hawks in school day game

It was a day to remember for over 3,000 youngsters that attended Thursday morning's school day game between the Waterloo Warriors and the Laurier Golden Hawks. But for the visitors in black and gold, it was a day to forget.

The Hawks erupted for four goals in each of the last two periods en route to a 9-0 win at the Waterloo Memorial Rec Complex.

Alex Adams scored twice, while Erik Pushka added a goal and two assists for Laurier. Five other hawks enjoyed multi-point games, led by Anthony Conti's three assists. Chris Festarini made 31 saves for the shutout victory, which pushed Laurier to 10-3-2 – and first place in the OUA West division.

It was a tough loss to end a tough month for the Warriors, who fall to 5-8-2 on the season. Eight of their nine November games were against one of the league's top six clubs, and their November opponents have a combined record of 68-24-12.

Anthony Sorrentino opened the scoring – and ignited the popular teddy bear toss – when he followed up on a huge save from Trevor Martin (Ardrossan/) to bat home a rebound. Other than the game's first goal, the relatively even first period ended with the Hawks holding a 1-0 lead.

But Laurier blew the game open in the second, starting with a Danny Hanlon power play goal just 37 seconds into the frame. Pushka and Jeremy Pullera made it 4-0 midway through the period, before Adams scored Laurier's fifth goal with just 19 seconds left in the second.

Mike Morrison (Hamilton/) came on to replace Martin in the third, but the Hawks kept coming in waves – the hosts scored four times before the period was nine minutes old, including three in a span of just 48 seconds, to put the game truly out of reach.

The Warriors will now look to put this game in their rearview mirrors and end the semester on a high note when they travel to play the Brock Badgers on Friday, December 1. The puck will drop for the final game before the exam and holiday break at 7:15 in St. Catharine's.
