The Warriors women's volleyball team put together a strong effort against one of the country's top teams in their final contest of 2017.
Despite dropping the five set battle to the No. 9 Ryerson Rams, Waterloo took a lot of positives out of the match and proved they can compete with the best of the best.
Waterloo took the opening two sets in thrilling fashion, 28-26 and 27-25. Outside hitters
Kayla Wierts (Drayton/) and
Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver/) were outstanding in those sets leading the Warriors in their attack.
Serena Otshudi (Stoney Creek/) also stood tall at the net with several big blocks.
Ryerson would however show why they are one of the top teams in the final three sets, taking away Waterloo's momentum and claiming the final three 25-12, 25-15, 15-7.
Wierts led the Warriors in points with 17.5 on 16 kills and three blocks while Mackenzie had 12 kills and 13 digs. Otshudi finished with a team high six blocks while
Kelsey Caza (Waterloo/) also had a stellar game in the middle with 12 kills of her own.
Defensively
Sarah Remedios (Ajax/) was outstanding making several highlight reel digs, wowing the over 400 fans in attendance at the PAC. Remedios finished with a game high 22 digs.
Rookie setter
Katrine Eistrat (Toronto/) had a nice match herself with 42 assists.
For Ryerson it was outside hitter Janelle Albert leading all players with 22 points on 19 kills, two service aces and a couple of assisted blocks.
Waterloo will head into the Christmas break with a 3-6 record and will get back into action with a pair of home games against Lakehead on January 13 and 14.
