Tennis Report: Men with impressive win over York

13458Men's Report

The Warriors ended their last matches of the regular season this past weekend with solid performances    against York and Queen's winning and losing by the same scores.

On Saturday, the Warriors traveled to York campus to face the Redmen, the team that ousted them in the first round of the OUAs last year.  The Warriors started well with all three doubles teams sweeping the Redmen, thereby gaining the important doubles point.  In singles, the top two Warriors, Eddie Wang (Richmond Hill/) and DJ Fenerty won their singles handily but the three matches in the middle order lost in hard-fought matches.  Saifullah Shoaib (Karachi, Pakistan/) was solid at #6 and came away with a win giving the Warriors a 4-3 victory.

On Sunday, the Warriors were back at home to play Queen's in their last match before the OUA championships.  With several of the higher-ranked players out of the lineup, the Warriors who were in action put out tremendous efforts in very close and exciting games. In doubles, only the #2 pairing of Eddie Wang (Richmond Hill/) and Saifullah Shoaib (Karachi, Pakistan/) were able to secure a win enabling Queen's to win that first point.  In singles, Wang at #1 faced a hard-hitting and much improved Michael Stych losing in two sets. The next three singles matches all went the distance and in Waterloo's way. With the score tied at 3-3, the deciding point rested on the racquets of the #4s. Alex Stoll, a rookie for Waterloo lost the match in three entertaining and highly competitive sets enabling Queen's to edge Waterloo 3-4.  Creditable performances also came from Fenerty, Peter Hull (Toronto/) and Mark Tyhurst (Ottawa/) who all came from a set down to win in three.

It was a weekend of solid performances and tremendous efforts by the Warriors and excellent preparation for the task ahead next weekend.

Waterloo ended the regular season in fourth place. The OUA Championships which are being hosted by University of Toronto take place at Mayfair-Toronto Parkway club in Markham Oct 6-8.

Women's Report

The Warriors ended their regular season with solid performances even though they lost to York on Saturday and Queen's on Sunday.

Playing on the outdoor courts at York, the women had to adjust to the unaccustomed conditions whilst facing the season's strongest women's team. The conditions, though, didn't play a part in the results. There was one bright light when Waterloo's #1 Nancy Baloescu (Kitchener/) eked out a win against York's #1 Heather Hills  in a tense super-tiebreak winning 10-8 in lieu of a third set.  Earlier in doubles, Baloescu and her partner, Lupita Widyasanti (New Westminster/) lost narrowly 7-8 at the #1 doubles.

On Sunday against Queen's, the play couldn't have been more closely contested. All three doubles matches ended with identical score of 8-7 but with Queen's taking two of the three matches. This doubles point was to prove valuable because the six singles that followed were split with three wins each, with five of the six singles going to three sets making it the longest day of competition this season for the Warriors. The only match that was won in two sets was that of Warriors #6 Ava Skuse (London/).  Play ended six hours after it began with #2 Nathalie Skaf (San Jose/) losing 8-10 in the super tie-break to Zoe Sullivan. The men and women's teams of both schools cheering every precious point won by their players added to the dramatic and exciting finish.

Despite the 3-4 loss, the Warriors' performance as a team was very encouraging and proved an ideal preparation for the upcoming OUA Championships next weekend.

Waterloo ended the regular season in fifth place.  The 2017 OUA Championships are being hosted by University of Toronto Oct 6-8 at the Mayfair-Toronto Parkway club in Markham Oct 6-8.
