Naismith Day 2 Recap: Men reach triple digits in win over UQAM

Box Score The Warriors men's squad had an impressive 104-89 win over the UQAM Citadins to improve to 2-0 at the 49th annual Naismith Classic.  Waterloo got off to a slow start in the opening quarter as the Citadins held a 30-12 lead through the opening 10 minutes but Waterloo's offence awoke and put up 36 points in the second to take a slim 48-47 lead into half.

The Warriors offensive dominance continued in the second half as the black and gold put up another 30 points in the third quarter and held the opposition to 23 to take an eight point lead into the final quarter.  Waterloo's defence stood tall in the final quarter and the Warriors would cruise to the 15 point victory.  

Waterloo's offence was sizzling with a 52.2 field goal perecentage compared to 45.1% for the visitors.  Waterloo was also strong at the line for a second straight game, hitting 21 of 26 free throws.  

Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) was steady as ever with 26 points going 9-for-12 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line.  Rookie Jeff Baradziej (Grimsby/Wasatch Academy (Utah)) had his best game with his new team putting up 18, which included four from beyond the arc while Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) had 17 in the win.  Three other Warriors reached double digits with Justin Malnerich (Cambridge/St. Benedict's Catholic Secondary School) putting up 14, Evan Rodenburg (Cambridge/St. Benedict's Catholic Secondary School) 12, and David Ramon Prados (Madrid/Virgen de Atocha (North Platte College)) 11.

Waterloo now sits at 2-0 with a point differential of +34 while Ottawa is also at 2-0 with a +25 (max of 20 reached with win over MacEwan).  The Warriors are therefore in first spot heading into the final day of the tournament.   

On the women's side, Waterloo's offence struggled in the final game of Day two, as the black and gold fell to Toronto 63-37.  Ella Mahler led the way with seven points in the game while Keyira Parkes of Toronto led all scorers with 18.  Toronto moved to 2-0 in the tournament while Waterloo fell to 1-1.
