Naismith Day 1 Recap: Warriors perfect in opening games

The Warriors men's and women's basketball teams opened up the 49th annual Naismith Classic in style, both winning their respective games.

The women's team defeated the St. FX X-Women 58-53 thanks to a big fourth quarter where the black and gold outscored the X 19-12. Afifa Salad (Cambridge/) had a breakout game for the Warriors posting a game high 17 points, going 7-for-13 from the field with two going down from beyond the arc. Salad also had eight rebounds in the win.

Rookie Megan Goar (Waterloo/) contributed nine points in her first contest with the Warriors while Hilary Ferguson (Cambridge/), Julia Pavlik (Waterloo/), and Sydney Wilson (Guelph/) each had six. Wilson led the way on the boards with 10.

In the final game of the night, the men's squad used a huge second half, outscoring MacEwan 52-28 to defeat the Griffins 95-76. Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) went off in the second half, putting up 17 in a 29 point performance. Petrov went 11-for-19 while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.

Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) was also spectacular in the game putting up 19 points. Justin Hardy (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) and David Ramon Prados (Madrid/Virgen de Atocha (North Platte College)) rounded out the Warriors attack with 13 and 12 points respectively.

As a team the Warriors shot an impressive 50% from the field, compared to 41.9% fior the Griffins. Waterloo also did a lot of their damage at the line going 14-for-18 while MacEwan struggled operating at just 47.1% at the line (8-for-17).

The Waterloo men's team will play an afternoon game today against UQAM at 4pm while the women battle Toronto at 8pm.
