Warriors fall to Ottawa and Carleton in first games of 2017

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Waterloo men's basketball team were given a tough assignment to open 2017, facing off against two of the top teams in the country.

On Friday evening at the PAC Waterloo fell to the No. 4 Ottawa Gee Gees by a score of 83-48.  A slow first half put Waterloo way back of the Gee Gees heading into half and they couldn't catch up in the final 20 minutes.  The Warriors best quarter came in the third where they put up 19 points to Ottawa's 22.

Leading the way for Waterloo was a pair of rookies as Justin Hardy (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) and Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) put up 13 and 11 points respectively.  Hardy was 3-for-9 with two from beyond the arc, including an incredible 3/4 court shot that just beat the buzzer to end the first quarter.  Hodzic went 5-for-9 while also chipping in with seven rebounds.  Mike Pereira (Kitchener/Resurrection Secondary) led the black and gold on the glass with 11 rebounds.

On Saturday night, Waterloo was up against the top team in the country, the Carleton Ravens, a squad that has won 12 of the last 14 USports Championships including six straight.  The Warriors dropped the contest 101-60 and despite the scoring line, showed positive signs in the loss.  Carleton out scored Waterloo by 15 in the opening quarter and 16 in the final quarter but were generally matched by the black and gold in the other two quarters.

Jon Ravenhorst (Sarnia/Sarnia Northern) led the way with 14 points while the SJAM connection of Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) (12), Justin Hardy (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) (11), and Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) (10) were also all in double figures in points.  Hodzic was also the rebound leader with eight while Ravenhorst collected seven.

Waterloo will be back at it again with another pair of home games next Friday and Saturday, both against the Algoma Thunderbirds.  Both games are set for 8pm.
