Box Score In their first game of 2017, the Waterloo Warriors were quick to regain their legs after the long holiday and exam layoff. Unfortunately for them, Laurentian Voyageurs goalie Joel Vienneau was quick to regain his, too.
Vienneau posted a 37-save shutout, and Voyageurs forward Jacob Smith scored the eventual game-winning goal in the first period, as Laurentian topped Waterloo 2-0 on Friday night in Sudbury.
Mike Morrison (Hamilton) made 18 stops for the Warriors, who fall to 5-9-3 on the season. The Voyageurs, meanwhile, improved to 8-8-2.
The Warriors fell behind just one second shy of the mid-way point of the first period, and they were never able to find the equalizer. Waterloo ratcheted up the pressure in the final 40 minutes, outshooting the Voyageurs 28-13 in the last two periods. But Vienneau and Laurentian held the fort, allowing Graham Yeo to salt the game away with an empty-netter.
The Warriors will continue to search for their first win of the calendar year when they visit the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, January 7. Puck drop is slated for 7:15.
