Box Score The Waterloo women's hockey team did everything right but still managed to come away empty handed on Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to cross town rivals Laurier.
It was alumni day at the CIF and it looked as if Waterloo was going to skate to an easy victory but Laurier's netminder Amanda Smith came up huge stopping 37 of 38 shots faced to give her team the three points. The Golden Hawks meawhile could only muster 10 shots on net but made the most of their chances with two goals.
With the loss, Waterloo fell to 10-7-1 while Laurier earned just their third win of the season.
Laurier opened the scoring in the opening period as Jamie Watson put a seeing eye shot on net that got past
Stephanie Sluys (Clinton).
The Warriors found the equalizer in the second as
Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) picked up a loose puck out front and fired it past Smith top corner.
Michelle Tanel (Toronto) and
Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove) earned the helpers on the power play marker as the game went into the third tied at 1's.
Waterloo continued to pepper Smith with quality chances but just wouldn't get the bounce they were looking for and Laurier took full advantage as Carly Aucoin picked off a Tanel pass at Laurier's blue line and went down all alone on Sluys. With plenty of time to think of her move, Aucoin went high blocker and beat Sluys with the eventual game winning goal.
Waterloo will be back at it next weekend when they host Brock on Sunday at the CIF. Puck drop is set for 2:30pm.
