Patriotes skate past Warriors

Box Score

In the first game of their trip through Waterloo, the UQTR Patriotes lost 3-2 to Laurier in a shootout on Friday night, despite outshooting the Golden Hawks 54-29. A day later, the Patriotes took out their offensive frustrations on the Waterloo Warriors.

Reigning national player of the year Guillaume Asselin registered a goal and an assist, and Alexandre Belanger made 32 saves for his second shutout of the season, as the Patriotes topped the Warriors 4-0 on Saturday evening in Waterloo.

Pierre-Olivier Morin and Tommy Giroux added a pair of assists each for UQTR, who improved to 13-6-2 on the season. Defencemen Martin Levebvre and Jeremy Beaudry also scored for the Patriotes, while forward Pierre-Maxine Poudrier rounded out the scoring for the visitors.

For the host Warriors, the loss snaps their mini two-game winning streak, as their record fell to 7-10-3. The Waterloo power play struggled, going 0-for-7 on the night, after a 2-for-10 showing in Friday's win over Concordia. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) did his best to hold his club in it, turning aside 30 shots in defeat.

After a relatively even-keeled first period, the Patriotes thought they opened the scoring late in the first stanza, only to have the goal waved back due to a high stick. With the game still 0-0 early in the second, UQTR had another goal called back when Morrison was interfered with.

However, the Patriotes finally broke through just short of the five-minute mark of the second period, when Beaudry scored on the man advantage to make it 1-0. Lefebvre added a goal in the latter portion of the second, and the visitors were ahead 2-0 after 40 minutes.

Asselin padded the lead at 8:40 of the third, and Poudrier finished off the scoring with a goal at the 15:25 mark. Waterloo's Cam Nicoll (Loretto) came the closest to breaking Belanger's shutout bid, but he, too, had his goal called back due to goaltender interference. Morrison also made a stop in the game's dying minutes on a penalty shot, but the damage was already done, as the Patriotes claimed the 4-0 decision.

The Warriors will now look to bounce back on a short week, as they visit the Ryerson Rams on Thursday, January 19 at 7:15 pm.
