The Warrior men's basketball team concluded their 2015-16 season with a 104-82 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Waterloo fell behind by 11 after the opening quarter and the black and gold trailed the rest of the way en route to the 22 point loss.
Laurier shot 45.5% from the field compared to 39.7% for Waterloo but the difference came on the boards as Laurier corralled 51 rebounds compared to 40 for the Warriors. Laurier also received 27 points off the bench as Peter Campbell used all of his bench in his final game as head coach of the Hawks. Waterloo could only muster nine points from their bench.
Waterloo received spirited efforts from
Jon Ravenhorst (Sarnia) and
David Bajic (Kitchener) who put up 21 and 20 points respectively. Ravenhorst knocked down six from beyond the arc and also added three assists and one steal. Bajic went 8-for-19 from the field while adding four free throws.
Dylan Phillips (Hamilton) was also a factor with 16 points while
Ben Davis (Mississauga) had 13.
For the Hawks it was Warrior killer Will Coulthard leading the way with 21 points while Matt Chesson had 20.
Despite Waterloo finishing the season with just one win,
Justin Gunter is optimistic looking towards next season.
"I am proud of the effort that the guys showed this year, we battled hard and definitely showed improvement as the season progressed. The OUA is the toughest conference in the country and we need to improve in order to be more competitive next season", said Gunter. "We are working extremely hard on the recruiting trail and hope to announce a few key commitments in the coming weeks."
